In 2008, a database corruption event at Netflix took their entire DVD-rental and streaming platform offline for three days. The root cause was not the database itself โ it was the monolithic architecture. Every feature, every team's code, every data access pattern was deployed as a single unit and connected to a single database. When that database went down, everything went down at once. There was no isolation, no blast radius, no independent recovery path.
Netflix came back from that outage with a mandate: decompose. Over the next seven years they migrated to 700+ independently deployable microservices, each owned by a small team, each with its own data store.

A microservice is an independently deployable service that owns a single bounded business capability and its own data. The two operative words are independently deployable and owns its data. A service that shares a database with others, or that requires coordinated deploys, is a distributed monolith โ the worst of both worlds.

Getting service boundaries right is the most consequential decision in a microservices migration. Cut them wrong and you get a distributed monolith; cut them right and you get genuine deployment independence.
Domain-Driven Design and Bounded Contexts
Domain-Driven Design (DDD) is the most principled approach. A bounded context is a clear boundary within which a domain model applies consistently. User means something different inside an Orders service (a buyer with a cart) than inside an Auth service (a principal with credentials). DDD says: keep those models separate, own them inside their service, and communicate across boundaries through well-defined APIs.
In practice: map your business domains first (Orders, Inventory, Payments, Notifications), identify where the domain language diverges, and draw service boundaries at those seams.
The Strangler Fig Pattern
Named after the fig tree that grows around a host and gradually replaces it, the Strangler Fig pattern lets you migrate a monolith incrementally โ without a risky big-bang rewrite.
The steps are:
- Put a facade (API gateway or proxy) in front of the monolith.
- Route one specific capability (e.g., user profile lookups) to a new standalone service.
- Let the old monolith code for that capability die once the new service handles all traffic.
- Repeat for the next capability.
This is the safest migration path because production traffic validates each extracted service before you cut the next one.
Business Capability Decomposition
Decompose by what the business does, not by technical layers. Instead of splitting into frontend-service, backend-service, and database-service (technical layers โ wrong), split into checkout, inventory, notifications, analytics (business capabilities โ right).
Technical layer splits create services that must change together. Business capability splits create services that can change independently.
Data Decomposition: Each Service Owns Its Database
This one is a rule, not a strategy: each service must own its own data store. No two services may read from or write directly to another service's database. Cross-service queries must go through the owning service's API.
This constraint is what makes independent deployability real. Without it, a schema change in one service's database cascades into every other service that shares it โ and you are back to coordinated deploys.

Once services are split, they need to communicate. The choice between synchronous and asynchronous communication is one of the most impactful decisions in microservices design.
Synchronous Communication: REST and gRPC
In synchronous communication, the caller waits for the response before proceeding. This is appropriate when the result is needed immediately (e.g., a checkout validation that must block until inventory is confirmed).

Use REST when simplicity and external client compatibility matter. Use gRPC for internal service-to-service calls where latency and type safety are priorities.
Asynchronous Communication: Message Queues
Asynchronous communication decouples the sender from the receiver โ the sender publishes a message and does not wait for processing. This is appropriate for workflows where eventual consistency is acceptable (e.g., sending an order confirmation email after checkout succeeds).
Apache Kafka is the dominant choice for high-throughput event streaming (order events, analytics pipelines). RabbitMQ is better suited for traditional task queues where routing flexibility matters more than throughput.
The trade-off: async communication buys you decoupling and resilience (the email service going down does not block checkout), but loses you synchronous guarantees. Debugging distributed failures through async message chains is significantly harder.
Service Discovery: How Services Find Each Other
With dynamic infrastructure (autoscaling, rolling deploys), services cannot rely on static hostnames. Service discovery solves this.

The database-per-service pattern is often the hardest constraint for teams migrating from a monolith, because shared databases feel efficient. They are efficient โ until they become a coupling point that makes every schema migration a cross-team coordination exercise.
Internals: How the Database-per-Service Contract Works
The core rule is strict: no service may read from or write to another service's database. Every cross-service data access must go through the owning service's API.
Under the hood, each service owns its own connection pool, schema, and data model. The Order Service uses MySQL with a normalized relational schema optimized for transactional writes. The Product Search Service uses Elasticsearch optimized for full-text queries. The Session Service uses Redis for low-latency key-value lookups. This polyglot persistence is only possible because no service sees another's internal storage.
Why shared databases break independent deployability:
- A shared database means a shared schema. Renaming a column requires every service that reads it to deploy simultaneously โ you have replaced code coupling with data coupling.
- A single database creates a single point of failure for all services: one bad migration or overloaded connection pool affects the entire system.
- Schema ownership becomes ambiguous. When two teams share a table, neither team can safely evolve it without negotiating with the other.
Handling cross-service queries without a shared database requires two approaches:
API Composition: the caller queries multiple services and assembles the result. An order detail page fetches order data from Order Service and user profile data from User Service in parallel, then composes the response. Simple and strong-consistent โ but adds latency proportional to the number of service calls.
CQRS (Command Query Responsibility Segregation): maintain a separate read-model (a denormalized projection) that joins data from multiple services, updated asynchronously via events. This avoids cross-service API calls on the read path at the cost of eventual consistency.
Performance Analysis: The Cost of Cross-Service Data Access
Every service boundary is a network hop. When Order Service previously did a SQL join against a users table in a shared database, the round-trip was sub-millisecond. With database-per-service, the same query becomes an HTTP call to User Service โ typically 1โ10ms per hop in a well-tuned local network.

For transactional writes that require consistency, API composition with synchronous validation is the correct choice even at higher latency cost.

The column you should read first in an interview: Deployment complexity and Operational overhead. These are the costs that surprise teams. The benefits (team autonomy, scaling granularity) only materialize if the team has invested in the infrastructure to manage those costs.

Two production case studies at opposite ends of the microservices spectrum show that the architecture is a tool, not a destination.
Netflix (2008โ2016): 1 service โ 700+ services. After the 2008 database outage, Netflix had a concrete and expensive problem: one failure domain took down everything. Their traffic was also growing 10x year-over-year. Segment (2017โ2020): microservices โ monolith. Segment built a data pipeline to ingest, transform, and route customer analytics events to 200+ destination integrations. They initially decomposed into microservices โ one service per destination. When a destination integration misbehaved, it only affected that integration. 3. Asynchronous communication is not "fire and forget." Async systems require dead-letter queues, idempotent consumers, and event replay strategies. Treat message loss as a first-class failure scenario from day one.
4. Distributed tracing is not optional at scale. Once you have more than five services, debugging a request failure without correlated trace IDs across services is guesswork. Add OpenTelemetry instrumentation before you need it.
5. Microservices shift complexity, not remove it. A monolith has complex internal coupling. Microservices have complex operational coupling (network, discovery, versioning, deployment). Budget engineering time for infrastructure tooling โ it is not free.
